Yep, you can choose! And a great place to start is in your New Year's Resolutions. As we move into the season of resolutions, set a positive intention for the new year. (I prefer “intention” over “goal”. “Intention” feels more as if it comes from spirit and “goal” feels too outward oriented.) Let your intention move you toward something you want rather than away from something you don’t want. Instead of “I don’t want to be overweight.” Make it “I choose health, vibrancy, and high energy!” Instead of “I don’t want debt.” Try “I choose abundance in my financial life!” You deserve and are worthy of your intentions. Choose life! Choose love! Choose health! Choose happiness!!
So, what are your new year’s resolutions? I love to set them and create them from a very deep way. I set a theme for each year and let that guide my resolutions. Want to know my theme from past years? Want to know this year’s theme? Read on...
I am teaching a New Year's Day workshop along with fellow muses, Karen and Marya. It is a day-long workshop for defining your dream and using the practice of yoga to bring it into your life. Want to play with us? Want 2009 to be an inspirational year?

My theme from 2006 was “Infinity” and the year was spent investigating what “infinite possibilities” were. 2007 was “surrender” to allow the Universe so guide me along my journey. 2008 is “creativity”, thinking creatively to move past any residual limitations I may have. I will keep you posted about what I learn!
I oddly have never resonated with "New Year's Resolutions". It seems for me that that takes something away from being present every day. I find the idea of a general "theme" for my year intriguing though. I think over the past few years I can say that I've had several themes of "gratitude", "growth", and "surrender" also. I think for 2009 I would like to start it with "vibrancy" and "adventure"!
I cannot wait for the 1st!! It is going to be SOOooo much fun to spend the day with you wonderful ladies! Should I get a brand new notebook just for the occassion?!?!?! I love notebooks!
I love notebooks too! A new notebook and pen would be an awesome way to start the new year.
My resolutions usually have the theme of "exercise more, eat less"--I think I will move beyond that this year! My theme for 2009 is nonattachment. I have been working on this for a few years but would like to bring more focus to it. One intention will be around nonattachment to the way I think things should be. I am much calmer, happier and energized when I can just let things unfold and not worry so much about the outcome. I carry this quote with me -- "If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have even more peace. So wherever you are attached, let go of that and come back to the center. Learn to see all movement of life with balance and Openness."...Achaan Chah. Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed this post because I've been going over my "intentions" for 2009 (and I am going to use this word going forward, I love it much more than resolution...thanks for passing that on)
I too identify with Beth's comment about nonattachment. I am trying to move away from attachment to things and to feelings: Such as feeling guilty if I didn't get my practice in.
I am going to have the intention for 2009 for Prana (life force, or vital energy) I want to move back towards a vegan lifestyle (currently we are vegetarians) and also continuing with my daily practice. I will be 30 this year so it is going to be a great year! :)
I also want to give back more!
I have never had a "theme year" and there is no better time than now to start. Yippee. OK - now what is my theme? This is something I'm going to think about over the next couple of days - I love Tammy's vibrancy and Flo's Prana themes. Hmmmm....
My intentions for 2009 are going to be:
-open to receiving
-gratitude
-giving back
-develop meaningful relationships
-growth
I love the themes! I have a few big intentions - I choose abundance in my financial life, I choose connection and compassion in my relationships and I choose inspiration and action towards achieving my dreams. As I was reading I did get inspired! I have a theme that fits all of my intentions.
Drum roll, please....my theme for 2009 is Bigger and Better!
My theme for 2009 is exploration. I want to continue to explore my beliefs, values and behaviors to see what no longer supports my bigger authentic life. I will let go of that which no longer supports me.
I love all of your intentions! They are so beautiful...and obviously come from a deeper place than the intentions of "shoulds". Thank you for sharing!
Happy '09 to ALL! Audrey
